Imperialism, the policy of extending power by taking control of economic and political aspects of an area.
Ethnic Groups
In the mid-1800s, Africa consisted of hundreds of different ethnic groups because of the Bantu migration.
European Influence
Dr. David Livingstone, an explorer, and missionary explored Africa in the 1850s and sparked the interest of other Europeans. King Leopold II of Belgium showed interest in the congo because of the resources.
Berlin Conference. many countries showed interest in Africa for the resources but did not want to fight over the land due to the industrialization occurring in their countries. The conference laid down rules for dividing up Africa.
Effect of Colonialism
The European countries divided Africa without regard to where African Ethnic or linguistic groups lived.
They set boundaries that combined peoples who were traditional enemies and divided other who were not
This caused ethnic tensions
Languages in Africa
There are more than 2000 Languages spoken in Africa, mostly derived from the Bantu Migration.
This makes addressing the people of counties difficult.
Religion
Sahel/North = Islam
Sub Saharan Africa = Christian
Small island = Hindu
