South EAST ASIA AND OCEANIA NOTES 2.0

HISTORY

  • Evidence of humans 1.8 million years ago
  • People began with agriculture and switched to trade quickly
  • Heavily influenced by Hinduism and Buddhism from India
  • the Khmer Empire was a powerful mandala that later roughly from the 9th – to 15th centuries in present-day Cambodia.

EUROPEAN COLONIZATION… Because of course

  • Islam spread to Indonesia around 1200 years ago by traders and missionaries
  • Europeans moved in during the 16th century
  • the entire area was taken under foreign control except for Thailand
  • Foreign influence is still seen in these countries today. The Philippines is a largely catholic country due to the Spanish colonization

POST WAR WORLD 2

  • Most countries gained independence after WW2 during the cold war. And were politically unstable
  • Indochina – French wanted back farmland in Cambodia, Laos, and Vietnam
  • the Vietnam War: The USA became involved to prevent communism. They eventually fall to communism and Lao and Cambodia follow.
  • Khmer Rouge: During the 1970s, pol pot was in charge of the communist party in Cambodia, which lead to a civil war in which they then took power. Caused a genocide of minority and opposition groups where 25% of the country’s population was killed.
  • Myanmar: AKA Burma is a country in SEA that is ruled by Junta. In 2016 the gov falsely accused the Rohingya people of attacking military personnel and began ethnic cleansing which caused fleeing to Bangladesh

MAINLAND SEA

CULTURAL CHARACTERISTICS:

  • Buddhism dominates the Cultural landscape
  • A multicultural and ethnic region
  • One of the least Urbanized regions in the world
  • Countries have more than once core area (Vietnam and Myanmar)
  • Minorities )Islam and Chirstianity

THAILAND

  • Lots of refuges
  • Drugs
  • Leading state of the region
  • Venice of Asia
  • Population 69 million (slowest growth rate in the region)
  • Per capita GDP of $7,273.56 USD which is about the same as Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, and Myanmar combined.

Myanmar

  • One of the poorest countries in the world
  • Independence in 1948 from brits
  • Military Government 1962
  • World’s longest-running ongoing civil wars
  • During this time many organizations have reported consistent and systemic human rights violations

Malaysia

  • Fragmented State- Part on the mainland & part on islands
  • A former British colony (speak English)
  • Came into being in 1963
  • Population 28.3 Million
  • Islam is popular

Singapore

  • Economic Dragon
  • Seceded from Malaysia in 1965
  • Per capita GDP 64k (US 62k)
  • Population 4.3 Million
  • City State

Indonesia

  • Fragmented State
  • Dutch Colonial creation
  • Population 224 Million
  • Java is the core with 125 million
  • Largest Muslim population in the world
  • in 2024 they are planning on moving their capital because of flooding and better schools(joking about better schools)

BRUNEI

  • An anomaly in SEA because they are an Oil Exporting Islamic Sultanate (they have a king)
  • A British protected remnant
  • Gained independence in 1984
  • 340,000 people in 2,225 sq miles
  • Oil was discovered in 1929, natural gas in 1965

Philippines

  • Archipelago of 7,000 inslands
  • Former Spanish Colony for 300+ years
  • 109 million people, 83% catholic
  • Agricultural Economy
