Anatomical Terms
VOCAB ANATOMICAL TERMS
- Standard position in which structures are described
- Never sitting, upside-down, or bent over.
- Palms Foward, Feet together, arms at the side, standing upright is the Anatomical Position
- When describing sides of an anatomical position you refer to the specimen right or left not your own.
- Anterior & Posterior, Anterior = Front of the body = ventral, Posterior = back of body = dorsal.
- Superior & Inferior, Superior is up toward the head, and inferior is down toward the feet.
- Proximal & Distal, Only used when describing 2 points on the SAME Limb. Proximal = Closer to where arm or leg inserts into body. Distal = Further away from where arm or leg inserts into the body.
- Medial & Lateral. Medial = Closer to the midline, Lateral = further from the midline.
- Superficial = toward the surface or at the surface of the body.
- Deep = more internal, away from the surface of the body
TYPES OF SYMMETRY
- Bilateral Symmetry = 2 sides
- Radial Symmetry = Symmetry along with a central point
- Asymmetric Symmetry = No symmetry
Planes of the Human Body
- Sagittal Plane cuts 2 by dividing head equally into right and left.
- Frontal Plane, Splits body into 2 for forward and backward
- Transverse, SPlits body into 2 by top and bottom
