Forms of Imperial Management

  • Direct Rule – French Colonies; Send foreign leaders to administer and manage a colony, including a military presence.
  • Indirect Rule/Protectorate – British colonies; rule through local administrations, usually a puppet, maintaining native institutions.
  • Sphere of Influence, special commercial and legal privileges without direct political involvement.
