Euro History, Scientific Revolution

People

  • Kepler devised 3 laws of planetary motion using brohames data and disagreed with Copernicus. (proves, heliocentric, oval revolutions,)
  • Galileo, Italian, is known as the father of science. (astronomy and telescope discoveries)
    • He disproves Aristotle
    • and made telescopes better
    • used to find data, and that stars are farther than planets, Saturn had rings, and the moon had mountains.
    • published his observation in a work. (1632)
    • Gets in trouble with the Catholic church as a result
  • Newton was sometimes referred to as the most important
    • portrayed the universe as a clock with strict rules, (and is accepted until the atomic age)
    • Newton could have discovered gravity via a fallen apple, though he may have just made that up.
    • Calculus
  • Andreas Vesalius starts the study of anatomy and writes the first book (Fabric of Human anatomy.)
  • William Harvey, argues that blood is pumped through the body by the heart. And therefore disproves classical-era knowledge.
  • Linneus, Flora, and Fauna (classifies) theorized that species don’t change but admitted at their deathbed that species can be mixed.
  • Lamarck, Botanist, and early theory of evolution. (largely discredited during his time)
  • Descartes, Geometry,

Kepler’s 3 laws,

  • Law of Elipsis,
  • Law of Equal Areas
  • Law of harmony.

Newton’s Laws of Motion,

  • Law of inertia
  • Law of dynamics
  • Law of Reciprocal actions.

Galileo vs Catholic Church

  • They see Galileo’s work and belief as foolish as it went against scripture, and they label him as a heretic
  • Dialogs (galileo’s work) is added to the banned book list by the church
  • Galileo is on trial, and he is sentenced to house arrest, continued to write.
    • This resulted in a shock in the scientific community, causing most discoveries to be made north due to the fear of the church.

Medicine

  • Medicine before the revolution was based on faith
  • Hippocratic oath, doctors will do best by their patients

Inventions

  • Pendulum clock, made by the dutch (galileo made a sketch like it)
  • The microscope was first very simple and slowly improved in the Netherlands. (can see all the fun things like blood)
  • The barometer, the ability to read air pressure, was invented by an Italian physicist.
  • The thermometer was invented by an Italian scientist.
  • Mechanical Calculator, invented by a german inventor,
