Louis the 14th, the most, absolute monarch
Setting the stage for Loius XIV
Henry the fourth
- Major religious tensions in France between Catholics and the Huguenots
- The edict of Nantes established the religious toleration of the Huguenots. (Henry converted to Catholicism to help the country)
- Henry the Fourth is later then assassinated by a person who disliked the Edict of Nantes, which was signed by Henry the fourth.
Loius the 13th
- He is a weak king, his advisor Richellou was the one running the country
- As a result of Richellou, the nobility was hurt.
- New ideas such as Skepticism was born (nothing is certain). One person who used this was Descartes, who applied them to science.
Loius the 14th
- Began his rule when he was four. Due to his age, Mazarin his regent did most of the leading
- Some nobles did not like Mazarin, soo they revolted against Mazarin, which Loius never forgot. As a result, he excluded the nobility responsible for a lot. (Taxed them, and excluded them from councils)
- All this led to him never allowing the nobles to revolt, or in other words, he became soo powerful they couldn’t.
Actions of Loius 14th
- Expanded the Economy, Colbert (his minister of finance) used mercantilism to build Frances’s accounts. They also focused on the new world.
- He overturned the Edict of Nantes (that henry had signed)
- Lived in Luxury and was a patron of the Arts. He turned his father’s lodge into the palace of Versailles
- Under Loius Leadership, France becomes the most powerful nation in Europe.

War
- With Frances’s large population and the most powerful army, Loius began to expand the border. The wars become a large burden on the taxpayers
- Eventually, this expansion was stopped when nations banded together and formed a coalition against him.
One Last war for the french.
- French people wanted peace
- Instead of peace, they got another war
- This war was named the Spanish Succession
- France and Spain were in the midst of unification which scared the rest of Europe due to the amount of power that would be created. (too much power for the Bourbon Kings)
- The unification was stopped once a coalition of Europe intervened.
LEGACY
- Loius the fifteenth took over for a small amount of time.
- Strengthened French art, military, and colonies. High taxes, and large debt, and set the stage for french revolution
