Naming conventions for files in the New Archive system for projects (work in progress

File Type – Creation Type – Program – Lighting – ProjectName – Year Date – Scene Name (if used) – Notes (if used)

Example: FootageRenderUELumenNewYear2022

What it says: Footage created by Unreal engine render in the project named New Year in 2022 using Lumen Lighting System

3d

File Type – Creation Type – Program – Purpose – Project Association – Year and Date – Status – Notes (if used)

Example: OBJMODELINGBLENDERGRASSVERSION2NewYear2d4m22yFINAL

What is says: 3d model is an obj model created in blender through general modeling and is a version 2 of a grass model initially created for the New Year project and was created the second of the fourth month of 2022. And is the final or finished version of the Grass Model for this particular project. 

Texture

File type – Creation Type – program – Name – project association – year and Date – Status – Notes (if used)

Example: pngphotogeneratedTrueRealDirtNewYear2d4m22yBuildNotFINAL

What is says: texture is a png dirt texture created by photogrammetry in the software True Real for the project New Year and was created in the second day of the fourth month of 2022. And is an early model and not the final versions AKA it is not meant for use in an actual project.

VOCAB

  • UE = UNREAL ENGINE
  • BUILDNOTFINAL = A version of footage, image, 3d, or other that is a working build of the final product but is not the final product nor is it close to it
  • BUILDBEFORELAST = A version of footagem image, 3d, or other that is a working build and is the before the final product (second to last) essentially.

  • FOOTAGE = Video, Film, Or Raw.

  • LUMEN = UE software RT Solution for lighting
  • RT = Raytracing Lighting Solution (hardware not software)
  • rasterization = lighting often used in games

  • CLIPCHAMP = Name of video editor used back in 2022
  • XEDITOR = Name of free to use editor used back in 2021 (orignal name is not known)
  • RAW = Footage that is not edited beyond the initial creation. Any edit and it is then considered a Video, Another Video and some editing would then be considered a Film
  • FILM = Film is usually the full edited video with a combination of raw footage scenes, AKA its near the final product, it has multiple scenes, its edited, and is likely what the final Film will look like
  • VIDEO = like raw footage, but with some video editing, say color work or cuts to the original raw footage

The previous is a list of common words used in the file naming system that can be easily copied to prevent misspellings or wrong terms

Project before 2023 May not have the correct File Convention As it is too time consuming to modify those files at this point. File Convention Version 1 is starting to be used in 7/25/2023 and the first Project Will be Salem. To use the new Convention and System

File System

Each project is given a file, inside is a

  • Image
  • Footage
  • Other
  • Note
  • Audio

Folders. Each project folder is placed in a root folder known as ALICEARCHIVEDPROJECTS. The naming convention for project files are as follows: Project Name or Term – Year – Version (If)

Why? Project terms are sometimes used instead of names because the project was not exclusive or in other terms, it was used in multiple other projects. A term can also be used in the event you don’t remember the project name. Year gives a rough date of the creation of a project which can be useful when trying to make sense of similar sounding projects. Version is ONLY used in the event that the project is a continuation of another project or a remake of a previous project, For example the yearly Halloween project or the End of Year UE Renders, each is done once every year so a version number is less useful in this case, but for projects that get remakes within a year, it is more useful.

What happens to assets created for certain projects? All assets are first placed in the “other” file. After the project is done, or when best, they will be converted to the library of assets under the root folder ALICEARCHIVEDASSETS or Code Named ARK. The file conventions still apply on Ark. Once assets have been moved, A text file will be added to the notes folder of the project which shows which assets were created for this project and the information for why. This serves as a back up way of identifying files in the event the convention fails.
