History

  • Indigenous people of Australia arrived from southeast Asia about 50,000 years ago and later Oceania
  • Geographers divide Oceania into three regions
  • Micronesia, Tiny Islands
  • Melanesia, or black islands (volcanos not black ppl)
    Polynesia, meaning many islands
  • At the time the Europeans Colonized Southeast Asia, And later Oceania.

Australian Aborigines

  • Migrated at least 30k years ago
  • Aborigines call the beginning of the world the dreaming or Dreamtime
  • The oral tradition of storytelling tells of a vibrant cultural life Songs illustrate the Dreamtime and other tales of the lands, while dances and diagrams drawn in the sand accompany oral tales.
  • Aboriginal music is often recognizable for its most famous instrument, the didgeridoo.

Colonization

Island Cultures

  • People first explored and settled the South Pacific Islands from 1800 BC until around 700 AD
  • Spread from island to island on Twin hulled canoes called catamarans]
  • Polynesian culture grew and developed from 700 until 1595
  • Most islands were colonies of other nations from 1595 until after World War II

Social Issues

The Stolen Generation

  • A Stolen Generation, Between 1909 and the 1960s, the Australian government took about 100,000 mixed-raced children and gave them to white families to promote assimilation
  • Today, the aboriginal people call those children “The Stolen Generation

The Great Emu War

  • A Nuisance wildlife management military operation was undertaken in Australia over the latter part of 1932 to address public concern over the number of emus said to be running amok in the Campion district of Western Australia

Modern Culture
