Physical Geography of South Asia

  • Hymalayas- created through subduction
  • Brahmaputra– Known for massive floods in bangladesh. One of the three important rivers
  • Ganges– Sacred river to hindus and extreamly polluted, Most important river for this unit.
  • Indus– Cultural hearth for many ancient civilazations and cities such as harappa and mohenjo-daro, One of the three important rivers of this unit. This is where most people believe hindu began
  • The Deccan Plateau
  • Hindu Kush – Mountains
  • Indo-Gangetic Plain, its one of the most densely populatated areas due to the alluvium that floods and creates fertile soil

PHYSICAL TERMS

  • Monsoons, During the summer warm air comes, and in the winter comes the coold and dry. Summer Monsoons also cause mass flooding
  • Cyclone – Hurricane in the Indian Ocean
  • Alluvial – is land that is rich for farming
  • Estuary – A broadened seaward end of a river, where the rivers currents meet the ocean’s tides
  • Landlocked Countries, Nepal and Bhutan
